What are GLP-1 Agonists?

GLP-1 agonists are a type of medication that are used to treat type 2 diabetes or obesity. They are most often given as a liquid injection with a needle and syringe. We offer two brands of GLP-1 agonists: semaglutide and tirzepatide.

How Do GLP-1 Agonists Work?

GLP-1 is a hormone that is naturally made in the small intestine. A GLP-1 agonist mimics this hormone. GLP-1 does a few things: It triggers an insulin release from the pancreas and blocks glucagon secretion, which keeps blood sugar levels lower, and it slows the stomach from emptying and affects parts of the brain that process hunger, making you feel fuller for longer. This means that GLP-1 agonists generally lower appetite, resulting in reduced food intake and, ultimately, weight loss.

What to Expect

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your weight loss history and goals and determine if weight loss injections are right for you. Our nurse will devise a treatment plan for you and provide a prescription for GLP-1 injections that can be filled at a pharmacy. Once you receive your medication, you will administer the injections at home according to your treatment plan.
